ARI develops foundation models designed for humanoid robots operating in physical environments, including systems intended to help robots understand and respond to human behaviour.

Co-founders Lerrel Pinto and Xiaolong Wang are expected to lead robotics-related research efforts within Meta’s AI division.

According to TechCrunch, Meta said the acquisition would strengthen its capabilities in robot control systems, self-learning models and whole-body humanoid robotics.

ARI had earlier raised from AIX Ventures, although financial details were not disclosed.

Meta’s humanoid robotics push and what it means for AI

Before founding ARI, Pinto taught at New York University and co-founded Fauna Robotics, a robotics startup later acquired by . Wang previously worked at Nvidia and was associated with the University of California, San Diego.

The acquisition comes as large technology companies increase investments in robotics and physical-world AI systems, amid growing industry belief that future AI advancement will require machines capable of learning through real-world interaction.

Meta has been developing humanoid robotics technologies internally for several years. Earlier reports had indicated the company was exploring both AI software models and hardware systems for consumer-oriented humanoid robots.

The deal follows Amazon’s acquisition of Fauna Robotics and reflects intensifying competition among technology firms to secure robotics talent and .

Market forecasts for humanoid robotics vary widely. Goldman Sachs has projected the sector could reach USD 38 billion by 2035, while Morgan Stanley has estimated the market opportunity at up to $5 trillion by 2050.

Your Questions, Answered

What is Assured Robot Intelligence and what did it do?

Assured Robot Intelligence, known as ARI, was a startup building foundation models — large AI systems trained across many tasks — to help humanoid robots perform physical labour, including household chores, in complex real-world environments.

Who are the co-founders of ARI joining Meta?

Lerrel Pinto, formerly a professor at New York University and co-founder of Fauna Robotics, and Xiaolong Wang, formerly a researcher at Nvidia and an associate professor at UC San Diego, will both join Meta’s Superintelligence Labs.

What is Meta’s Superintelligence Labs?

Superintelligence Labs is Meta’s frontier AI research division, where the company conducts advanced work on artificial intelligence including, now, physical AI and humanoid robot control systems.

Why are major tech companies investing heavily in humanoid robotics?

Many AI researchers believe that reaching artificial general intelligence — AI that matches human capability across all domains — requires training systems in the physical world through robotic interaction, not data alone. This has triggered acquisitions across the industry.
