Block Imaging, a Michigan-based company that services and refurbishes medical imaging equipment including CT scanners and MRI machines, hosted forum attendees at its facility. The company demonstrated how it has applied learnings from the programme to improve efficiency in its operations.
“The Apple Manufacturing Academy has had a direct impact on how we operate,” said Katie Runyon, Block Imaging’s director of Technical Training. “The training we’ve received from Apple engineers and Michigan State experts has given our team practical tools and techniques we’ve been able to apply immediately on the floor.”
Priya Balasubramaniam, Apple’s vice president of Product Operations, said the academy was created to bring advanced manufacturing techniques to American manufacturers. “Our goal was to create real-world applications that help companies enhance their productivity and efficiency,” Balasubramaniam told attendees.
Programme part of Apple’s ₹56 lakh crore US commitment
The academy was launched as part of Apple’s $600 billion (approximately ₹56 lakh crore) commitment to the United States. The programme has conducted dozens of free in-person training sessions and recently added virtual programming to extend its reach.
The forum featured speakers from McKinsey, Magna, LightGuide and Medtronic addressing topics including physical AI — robotic systems that interact with the real world — on factory floors and the challenges of implementing AI solutions at scale.

Kevin M Guskiewicz, Michigan State University’s president, discussed with Balasubramaniam how AI is transforming manufacturing operations and what skills workers will need in an AI-enabled economy.
The initiative has implications for global supply chains. Apple manufactures a significant portion of its products in Asia, including India, where the company has expanded iPhone production through partners Foxconn and Tata Electronics. The manufacturing techniques being developed through the academy could potentially influence training and production methods across Apple’s global supplier network.
Forum attendees also visited MSU’s Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, Peckham, and the MSU Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center. A poster session featured MSU students and small business participants presenting manufacturing innovations.
