Apollo Hospitals is exploring the use of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft and medical delivery drones to transport critically ill patients, organs, blood products and medicines, as part of an effort to reduce emergency response times in congested cities and remote locations.
The healthcare group has signed a memorandum of understanding with Chennai-based electric aircraft manufacturer The ePlane Company to examine the integration of electric air ambulances into Apollo’s existing emergency healthcare and ambulance network.
The agreement, signed in Chennai, was announced at the Farnborough International Airshow in the UK on Thursday.
Under the proposed collaboration, Apollo and ePlane will study the deployment of the company’s e200X electric aircraft for inter-hospital transfers, trauma response, cardiac and stroke emergencies and organ transportation.
The initiative remains at an exploratory stage. Apollo has indicated that it may consider placing orders for the e200X air ambulances and medical delivery drones developed by Amber Wings, a subsidiary of ePlane. The memorandum also provides for the possibility of a strategic investment by Apollo in ePlane, subject to the two companies agreeing on commercial terms.
The proposed network would combine Apollo’s road ambulance fleet and healthcare facilities with electric aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles. Apollo operates a network of hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, diagnostic centres and more than 1,000 ambulances.
The companies said the aircraft could be used to move patients directly between accident locations, smaller medical facilities and specialised trauma centres, reducing dependence on road transport in areas affected by heavy traffic.
Medical drones are proposed to be used for moving blood, organs, vaccines, medicines and diagnostic samples between healthcare facilities.

The plan will require regulatory approvals, operating protocols and supporting infrastructure before commercial services can begin. The companies said they intend to engage with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and other authorities on certification and operational requirements.
The collaboration reflects growing interest among healthcare providers in advanced air mobility technologies, particularly for emergency response and time-sensitive medical logistics.
Unlike conventional helicopter ambulances, electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft are being designed to operate from smaller spaces, including existing helipads and potentially hospital rooftops. However, their wider adoption will depend on aircraft certification, operating costs, charging infrastructure, landing facilities and integration with emergency medical services.

Apollo Hospitals Chairman Prathap C Reddy said access to timely medical care remained an important factor in improving emergency outcomes.
“India loses far too many lives simply because help cannot arrive in time,” Reddy said, adding that the collaboration would examine how Apollo’s clinical services could be extended to patients in difficult-to-reach locations.
ePlane founder and chief technology officer Satya Chakravarthy said the partnership would allow the company to explore the use of electric aircraft and drones to reduce the time between an accident or medical emergency and specialised treatment.
For trauma, stroke and cardiac emergencies, faster access to appropriate treatment during the first hour can substantially influence patient outcomes. In India, congestion, long travel distances and limited access to specialised facilities often delay treatment.

Founded in 2019 and incubated at the IIT Madras Incubation Cell, ePlane is developing electric aircraft for passenger transport, medical emergencies and cargo movement.
Its e200X aircraft is currently in the DGCA type-certification process. Commercial deployment will begin only after the aircraft receives the required regulatory and safety approvals.
The company has also received design organisation approval from the aviation regulator for electric aircraft development.
Apollo Hospitals operates 76 hospitals with more than 10,000 beds, in addition to pharmacies, clinics, diagnostic centres and telemedicine facilities across the country.
