Google has launched its Pixel 10a smartphone in India at a price of 49,999 rupees, holding the line on last year’s pricing as it seeks to expand its footprint in a crowded mid-range market where consumers are highly price-sensitive and competition is intense.
The Pixel 10a will go on sale from March 6, with pre-orders opening on Tuesday. The device brings several features from Google’s flagship Pixel range into a lower-priced model, including AI-powered camera tools, a brighter display and a larger battery, as the company tries to differentiate itself beyond hardware specifications.
The phone offers a peak screen brightness of 3,000 nits, the brightest in Google’s A-series, and houses a 5,100 mAh battery, the largest in the lineup so far. Google said the device can deliver more than 30 hours of battery life on a single charge, with support for both wired and wireless fast charging.
A central focus of the launch is artificial intelligence, with features such as real-time photo guidance through Camera Coach and group photo optimisation via Auto Best Take, which automatically selects natural facial expressions for up to 20 people in a frame.
These tools, previously limited to premium models, reflect the broader industry push to use on-device AI as a selling point in saturated smartphone markets.
The company is also offering aggressive financing options, including cashback, exchange bonuses and zero-interest monthly instalments, alongside inclusion in its Pixel Upgrade Program, which allows buyers to upgrade to a new device after nine payments with an assured buyback. Such schemes are increasingly common, where high upfront costs can deter buyers in the mid-range and premium segments.
Google said it would provide seven years of operating system and security updates, positioning the device as a longer-term investment in a market where consumers often change phones every two to three years.
The handset also carries IP68 water and dust resistance and uses reinforced glass, targeting durability-conscious buyers.
Despite strong brand recognition in software and online services, Google remains a niche player in India’s smartphone market, which is dominated by Chinese brands and Samsung.
