As many as 17,792 police stations across the country were using the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) platform as of January 1, 2026, enabling near real-time collection, updation and analysis of data related to crime and criminals, the government informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
CCTNS is a nationwide digital policing project aimed at creating a comprehensive and integrated system for effective policing through information technology. The programme was launched in 2009 as part of the National e-Governance Plan.
In a written reply, Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar said the platform facilitates computerisation of core police processes, including registration of complaints, FIRs, investigation records, charge sheets, court disposals and appeals.
The system also enables search across national and state-level databases of crime and criminals and allows data sharing among state police forces, central investigative agencies, courts, prisons, forensic laboratories and prosecution departments, improving coordination in investigation and justice delivery.
For citizens, multiple online services are being offered through the Digital Police Portal and Central Citizen Services Portal, including missing persons search, generation of vehicle no-objection certificates (NOC), access to information on proclaimed offenders and location of nearest police stations.
In addition, state police portals provide nine mandated online services, such as online filing of complaints, tracking complaint status, downloading FIR copies, accessing details of arrested and wanted persons, information on missing or kidnapped persons, records of stolen or recovered vehicles, arms and property, applying for various NOCs, submitting verification requests, and downloading required police forms, the minister said.
The government said the growing adoption of CCTNS is aimed at improving transparency, operational efficiency and public access to policing services through digital platforms, while also strengthening inter-agency coordination at the national level.
