Key Points
- AI avatars of Gandhi and Vajpayee to launch by end of May at PM Museum
- Museum recorded over 6.4 lakh visitors in 2025–26 financial year
- Smart glasses for visually impaired visitors under development with startup
Visitors to Delhi’s Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya will soon interact with artificial intelligence-powered 3D avatars of Mahatma Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, with the exhibits set to launch by the end of May, officials told news agency PTI.
The avatars use AI technology to create digital versions of historical figures that can respond to visitor questions and simulate conversations. The project builds on earlier interactive installations featuring Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, which drew strong public interest at the museum dedicated to India’s prime ministers.
The museum, located within the historic Teen Murti Bhawan complex in the capital, marked four years since its inauguration on 14 April. It recorded more than 6.4 lakh visitors in the financial year 2025–26, with daily attendance averaging between 1,400 and 1,500 people.
Accessibility features and new technology
Beyond the AI avatar installations, the museum is developing technology to assist visitors with disabilities. Officials said the Sangrahalaya is working with a startup on AI-enabled smart glasses designed for visually impaired visitors. The glasses would identify objects and provide audio descriptions in real time.
The venue already features several interactive installations. These include a simulated helicopter ride over major infrastructure projects such as the Atal Tunnel and the Chenab Bridge, a national security gallery showcasing recent military operations, and a facility allowing visitors to generate personalised images with digital renderings of Indian prime ministers.
The Sangrahalaya combines a heritage building once associated with Jawaharlal Nehru and a modern extension completed in 2022. The newer galleries document the contributions of successive prime ministers, while the original structure focuses on Nehru and the framing of the Constitution.
